Christ in Islam -1

Assalaamu alaikum [peace be to you],

As part of a Christian-Muslim dialog, I'd like to start a series of articles about Jesus -peace be upon him- in Islam. the purpose of these articles is to allow my dear Christians brethren to understand what Muslims believe about Jesus -peace be upon him-, and Jesus (and his Mother)'s place in Islam. beside a comparison between the Islamic and the Christian views of Jesus -peace be upon him- for the benefit of both Christian and Muslim readers.
I hope you will benefit from these articles, in sha'Allah [God willing].
You may disagree with some of what will be said here, but please be respectful. keep in mind that I am just explaining my religion here. take it as 'add-to-your-knowledge'.



WE MUSLIMS BELIEVE, THAT JESUS -peace be upon him- WAS:
- ONE OF THE MIGHTIEST MESSENGERS OF GOD,
- THAT HE WAS THE CHRIST,
- THAT HE WAS BORN MIRACULOUSLY -WITHOUT ANY MALE INTERVENTION,
- THAT HE GAVE LIFE TO THE DEAD BY GOD'S PERMISSION,
- THAT HE HEALED THOSE BORN BLIND AND THE LEPERS BY GOD'S PERMISSION.
IN FACT NO MUSLIM IS A MUSLIM IF HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN JESUS!


Many of the Christians who hear this may be pleasantly, but sceptically, surprised. They may not believe their ears. They may surmise that the Muslims are playing to the gallery - that they are trying to curry favour with their fellow Christian countrymen; that if the Muslims would say a few good words about Jesus -peace be upon him-, then in reciprocation the Christians might say a few good words about Mohummed -peace be upon him-; that I scratch your back
and you scratch my back.

We cannot blame the Christians for their scepticism. Many people in the west have been so programmed for centuries. They were taught to think the worst of the man Mohummed -peace be upon him- and his religion. We Muslims are partly responsible for this staggering ignorance of the millions and millions of Christians of the world. We have not done anything substantial to remove the cobwebs.

Unfortunately, The Christian does not know that the true spirit of charity which the Muslim displays, always, towards Jesus -peace be upon him- and his mother the Lady Mary -may the God be pleased with her- spring from the fountainhead of his faith - the Qur'an. He does not know that the Muslim does not take the holy name of Jesus, in his own language, without saying alaihissalaam (meaning: peace be upon him).
Every time the Muslim mentions the name Jesus -peace be upon him- without these words of respect, he would be considered disrespectful and uncouth. The Christian does not know that in the Qur'an Jesus -peace be upon him- is mentioned by name five times (x5) more than the number of times the prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him- is mentioned in the Book of God. To be exact - twenty five times as against five.


JESUS -peace be upon him- and HIS TITLES:
Though Jesus -peace be upon him- is mentioned by name in twenty-five places in the Qur'an, he is also addressed with respect as: "Ibn-Maryam" - son of Mary; as Masih - (Hebrew Messiah - translated as Christ); "Abdullah" - servant of the God; "Rasoolullah" - Messenger of the God. He is spoken of as "the word of God", as "the spirit of God", as a "sign of God", and numerous other epithets of honour spread over fifteen different chapters. The Qur'an honours this mighty Messenger of God, and the Muslims have not fallen short over the past fourteen hundred years in doing the same...
