Ask about Art

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 8, 2012, 10:32 PM

I got many comments and notes from people asking me about my way of drawing and coloring. So that many people benefit, I'd like to make it public. I am making this journal for that purpose.
if you have any art-related questions, don't be shy, feel free to ask.

for example:

:bulletred: 1. What software do you use to draw?
:bulletgreen: I use Adobe Photoshop CS3.

:bulletred: 2. What software do you use to make Flash slideshows?
:bulletgreen: I use Adobe Flash CS3.

:bulletred: 3. Do you draw traditionally or digitally?
:bulletgreen: Digitally. I use a tablet in order to make everything you see in my gallery (Sketch, ink, colors).

:bulletred: 4. Where do you get your inspiration from?
:bulletgreen: From maaany things: articles and books, lectures, conversations and discussions, art...

...
ask more if you like

how long did it take you to have a specific style , and what's the process of doing that ?

also , is it better for the artist to have his own style or to be able to imitate others ?

thanks ^^

what you need to do is practice imitating your favorite artist(s) or the artists who draw in a style that you like to reach. while practicing, you are going to improve your style. of course this takes a few years.

also , is it better for the artist to have his own style or to be able to imitate others ?
At start, you need to imitate others. those who have better style than yours. when you reach their level, or at least, you improve a lot and consider it enough, you will find yourself already with your own style..

nature related drawings are the ones I enjoy the most.
perhaps that's why nature drawings are the only ones that have detailed drawn backgrounds in my gallery...

What inspired you to just Islamic art?

Well, many things. but mainly because of the lack of Islamic drawings, I decided to venture in this field.

Did you basically teach yourself and get better and better or did you have a mentor/teacher? :meow:

I didn't have a teacher. I learned by imitating other famous artists. through the years, I collected hundreds of thousands of anime (and other artstyle) artworks. I used them as references to learn how to draw and how to color...

Most of my backgrounds are simple.
as for calligraphy, I get it from some Arabic/Islamic symbols fonts and some Arabic calligraphy images that I collected through the years... when I don't find the one I want to use, I make it by myself using many Arabic fonts.

then I use some Photoshop styles on it.

I like the way u do ur lineart.. Can u explain about lineart??

2.when to use thick and thin lineart?

1. When to use black/colourful lineart?
I always draw with black lines, I keep the outlines black and sometimes I use lighter colors for the inside lines. I choose the line color based on the color of the area where the line is in.

2.when to use thick and thin lineart?
I always use a thick line ( brush size 5) for the outline and thin line (brush size 3) for the other lines inside.

Have you heard about Gimp? It's a free art software similar to Photoshop. Here's the website: [link]

There is also Paint Tool Sai, which is easier to use. It costs about 50 bucks (which is extremely cheap for good art software), and you get a 31 day free trial. [link]

Tablets can be expensive, but here's a link to some discounted tablets on sale: [link]

I've downloaded Paint Tool Sai.. but i dont know why my laptop couldn't open it.. insyaAllah i'll try again next time..

Here's a FAQ page for Sai if it continues to give you trouble: [link]

Anyway, I hope you're able to get a tablet! Drawing with a tablet takes a bit getting used to, but it's like riding a bike. With practice it gets really easy. :) Cheaper tablets also have less sensitivity, but I've seen people draw great pictures with cheap tablets. There's no substitute for talent and skill. :D

Good luck!
