Assalaamu alaikum [Peace be to you],

I got one guy (who seems to be a Christian) coming here and complaining because I take The Lady Mary and Jesus -peace be upon them- as good examples to follow. this made me feel that he considers Mary and Jesus copyrighted by Christians and that only Christians are allowed to talk about them and follow them (I know not all Christians would think the same, fortunately :D ). Well, what this guy does not realize, in fact, is that Islam is the only non Christian faith that makes it obligatory to believe in Jesus the son of Mary -peace be upon them-. A Muslim is not a Muslim if he disrespects Jesus. Islam makes it clear that Allah[God] honored the Lady Mary above the women of all nations.
I think it's very understandable why Muslims look high on Mary and Jesus. when Muslims talk about them, they talk from what their religion teaches.

Now we understand there are some differences between how Christians and Muslims view Mary and Jesus -peace be upon them- but this is in no way something that should prevent us from interfaith dialog to understand each other.

Alright, now let me talk more about Mary in Islam...

In Islam, Jesus -peace be upon him- is considered one of the five greatest prophets sent by God to mankind. and Mary -peace be upon her- his mother, is considered one of the geratest women who ever lived. I wonder how many Christians out there know that the mother of Jesus is recognized in the holy Qur’an. In fact the Qur’an has a whole chapter titled Mary. she is the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur'an.
The story of Mary and Jesus is best described in the Qur'an in chapters 3 and 19.

The story starts with Mary, who was blessed as a child with God’s protection. Mary was born to the pious household of the family of Imran. Many people argued for the honor of taking care of the child, but the responsibility was given to Zechariah -peace be upon him-, an elderly and childless man, who immediately noticed that the young girl was special. One day, Zechariah noticed that the girl had in her possession certain provisions for which he could not account. He asked her how she came by the food and she answered:"It is from God. Indeed, God provides for whom He wills without account."
This simple answer had a deep impact on the elderly man. Having long wished for a son, the devout Zechariah prayed to God for progeny. his prayers were answered almost immediately, although his wife was barren and beyond childbearing age.

The uniqueness of Mary, noticed by Zechariah, was spelled out to her by the angels:
“And when the angels said, “O Mary, indeed God has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds. O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those bow [in prayer].’”
the Holy Qur'an - translation of verses 3:42-43

In the Qur’an Mary is alone when she gives birth under the palm tree, and carrying the child she came to her people who said to her,
‘O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented. O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste.’
Then Mary made a sign to them pointing to the child. But they replied,
‘How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?’
Whereupon the babe spoke and said,
"Indeed, I am the servant of Allah . He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me prayer, and charity, as long as I live. And dutiful to my mother, and made me not arrogant, unblest. And Salam (peace) be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!"
the Holy Qur'an - translation of verses 19:30-33

speaking as a baby and defending his mother's honor was the first miracle of Jesus -peace be upon him- after his birth.

I hope that was beneficial.
