Assalaamu alaikum [peace be to you],

The "peaceful loving sisters" drawings seem to be the most viewed and favorited in my gallery:

so I thought I will make more. and take this opportunity to talk more about how Islam sees Muslim/non-Muslim relationship.

:bulletred: What Should be the Relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims?

Today, our topic is about one of the most important Islamic topics because it answers many questions we often raise. This is a practical topic because we interact with Non-Muslims on a daily basis. We should understand the nature of the Muslim/Non-Muslim relationship, and its goals and guidelines.

We must first ask ourselves, what is the Islamic goal behind our relationship with Non-Muslims?
Well, It is, “To convey the message of Islam to all people, to deliver it freely, to insure the freedom of religious beliefs, and to establish justice on earth.” This goal is a divine obligation prescribed by Allah almighty upon Muslims. He, glory be to him, holds the Muslim nation responsible and accountable for establishing these goals.
Each relationship with Non-Muslims, whether they are on the personal or state level, should be to achieve this goal. Islam orders us to strengthen this relationship with Non-Muslims and to eliminate anything that will weaken or make it harder to achieve this goal.

It is the foremost duly of a Muslim to recognize the respect and dignity of all human beings. The Qur'an says (translation) “Verily we [God] have honoured the children of Adam (human beings)”. The Quran admits of racial, geographic and national differences among peoples, but firmly disowns them as the basis of the classification of mankind.

The life of the last prophet of Islam, Mohammed -peace be upon him- and the lives of his companions -may Allah be pleased with them- are full of great examples that promote good relationships with Non-Muslims.

:bulletred: Peace is the normal state:

Peace, tolerance, compassion, and good relationships are the normal, and original state between Muslims and Non-Muslims. Islam promotes and protects this good relationship. Animosity and war are exceptions to this original state, when these exceptions do not exist, then we should return to the original peaceful state.
The God almighty said in the final testament:
لَّا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَارِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوا إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

the Qur'an - translation of verse 60:8
This great verse clearly states the normal and original state for a good relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims. Allah did not prevent Muslims from establishing good relationships with Non-Muslims. He clearly says that our relationships with Non-Muslims should be based on the best morals and justice with those who declared peace upon us and did not fight us.

Muslim scholars agree that the most correct opinion in understanding this verse is that Muslims should be just, fair, and have the best relationship with all Non-Muslims who ‘do not fight against us on account of our religion and do not drive us out of our homes.’ This includes people of all faiths and sects.

Islam is a way of peace and a conviction of love. It is a system that has compassion to all people. It gathers all people (Muslim and Non-Muslim) like brethren in accord and love. the normal relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims should be based on the best morality and justice. If we fail to establish this relationship, then we are committing aggression and injustice, and Allah does not love transgressors and unjust people.

What are the things that we Muslims can do to establish tolerance, compassion, and justice in relationships with Non-Muslims? we'll see that in the next article.

to be continued, in sha'Allah...
